Have you checked whether Windows XP still works. Remember what happened to my computer. Of what I've read, the problem is with the 2.6 kernel, which means that the official release of Mandrake 10.0 has the same problem the beta that I was using did, so I'd check that if I were you. I'd suggest FreeBSD. Fedora is ok-ish (It's sort of like an uber-branded version of Mandrake: it doesn't have KDE or Gnome, it has Fedora Window Manager, which happens to be a rebranded Gnome, and Fedora really really really really hates KDE...). I've never taken the time to download all of the Debian CDs, so I've never tried that. Slackware is very good, but if you were to go that route, then why not go all the way and use FreeBSD. I like FreeBSD.

And another reason I don't like Fedora is that Tuxracer didn't work for me without severe config-file tweaking.

FreeBSD is good. The only thing I don't like about it is that there's no Tuxracer It might be in the ports, but I haven't seen it and even if it is, I can't install it without an internet connection on that computer.

Yeah, pendulums and static electricity can kill. Well, when I was cleaning out the storage room over summer, we found a mason jar of mercury, and I sliced my finger open in the Modern lab - nearly did have to go to the hospital for that one
