Remember that old refurbished Gateway I bought a few years back?
Well, I think I want to put in another motherboard since Windows 7 hates nearly every single program I want to run and I have no old computers left I can use. I tried a couple of different things I found online and no luck... I really liked that old Gateway, and I miss it, so I thought I might try and resurrect it.
Any sugestions for going about this guys?
From what I can tell, I need to be able to run WinXP or older...

The problem is going to be connecting your new motherboard to your old drives and such. Computers have transitioned from the old IDE interface that has been around since the 80's. You need to look at everything else in the old computer which you want to keep, and see how it connects before you can start looking for the replacement.
Actually, now that I think of it, I have an old Dell tower that I can trade you for... something or another. It probably currently has Linux installed on it, but I trust you could find and install a copy of XP. P4 processor, 1 gig of RAM, 200 gig HDD, I don't remember what else. It's just collecting dust if you want it.

Yeah, that would work. I still have my copies of XP here. Really the only drive I want to hold onto would be the hard disk. It has some files I've wanted to recover on it it...
What would you want for it? All I have lying around here is the old beater gateway and the old gateway tower with the dead motherboard, and my dead gateway laptop... All are collecting dust and in various states of disassembly...

Box of random spare parts should do the trick. That's all I was keeping this guy around for, anyways.
And I misspoke before. It is an HP, not a Dell...
Edit: if all you are looking to do is recover files on an old hard drive, I have a gizmo sitting around here designed specifically for that purpose. Plugs the HDD into a USB port.

Cool, I think we can make a deal with that. I want it for my old games, however, I do want the stuff off of its hard disk too...

we will have to meet up and swap, then. Laura will probably be happy to see this box leave the basement...

We will have to, but does she know that there may be up to 2 other boxes taking it's place? Maybe we can figure out a time and go to A&W or something?

Thanks for the driver, much appreciated.
Also, Shan and I had a great time Sunday night. We'll have to do this again sometime. Thanks to you and Laura for a great time.
